Boy in critical condition after Amish buggy crash in Upstate NY

Essex, N.Y. — A 15-year-old boy is in critical condition after an Amish buggy was hit by a car in Upstate New York.
The accident happened shortly before 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Essex, a small Adirondacks town about 40 minutes east of Lake Placid and less than 10 miles west of Lake Champlain.
A 16-year-old Essex boy was driving an Amish buggy on Stowersville Road with his two brothers when the buggy’s back left tire was hit by a passing car, the New York State Police said in a news release. The impact ejected the teenager and his two brothers — ages 15 and 12 — from the buggy, troopers said.
The 15-year-old boy was rushed to Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh with a serious head injury, troopers said.
He was later transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, Vermont, where troopers said he is in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.
Despite being thrown from the buggy, the 16-year-old driver and his 12-year-old brother were not injured, troopers said. Both boys were evaluated by EMS at the scene of the crash.
The boys’ names were not released.
The gray 2013 Subaru Impreza that hit the buggy was driven by Larry Crowningshield, 59, of Keeseville, troopers said. Crowningshield was driving west on Stowersville Road when he hit the buggy’s tire near the top of a hill, troopers said.
State police did not say if any tickets had been issued or charges had been filed.
The state police were assisted by the Essex County Sheriff’s Office and “local fire and rescue” departments, troopers said.
